MEET CLEO!
Boys & Girls Club of Shelby County Acquires A Therapy DogThe Blue River Community Foundation (BRCF), in partnership with Ross and Ena Sobel of the Smidt Family Foundation, recently awarded a grant to the Boys and Girls Club of Shelby County to support the acquisition of a therapy dog. Last month, they met Cleo, a four-month-old mini Goldendoodle! She will visit the club periodically until she becomes a permanent member of their team. This specially trained dog will play an integral role within the club, participating in various structured activities, such as individual sessions with members, group therapy, and educational workshops on responsible pet care and animal welfare. In addition to the generous support from the Smidt Family Foundation, the initiative received contributions from several community funds held by BRCF, including the Julia C. Runnebohm Memorial Fund, Paul & Velta Harrell Memorial Youth Fund, Shelby County Youth Shelter Fund, and the Caring Fund for Animals. HONORING A LEGACY
Mildred McCrea's Enduring ImpactAlthough it has been 18 years since the passing of Mildred McCrea and her generous gift to our community, BRCF is still singing her praise. As part of her estate planning, Ms. McCrea established two funds at BRCF. The first being a designated fund that would provide annual payouts to 10 nonprofit organizations, in perpetuity, and the other a community fund to provide support to address immediate and future needs. At the time of fund establishment, Mildred contributed $68,925 to the McCrea Family Fund in order to take advantage of the Lilly Endowment’s GIFT V opportunity. Mildred McCrea

The Beatys Put Their Money Where Their Mouth Is
Synchronicity is a phenomenon we experience often in our office at Blue River Community Foundation (BRCF). We don’t know how to explain the high frequency in which it occurs, but the experience is quite prevalent. Oftentimes when we speak something, the universe listens and immediately answers. Frequently, a staff member will mention that we need to reach out to a particular donor or other, contact and that person will call the office within a day or two. READ MORE SERVE SHELBY DAY

Robert Edward Elliott Jr.
Memorial Scholarship Fund
Type: Scholarship Fund
The Robert Edward Elliott Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established in 2024 by Theresa and Joe Harlan to honor Theresa’s brother Robert Elliott. Robbie was a lifelong resident of Shelbyville, Indiana and served on the Shelbyville Fire Department from 1989 until his retirement in 2009. Robbie was extremely proud to have served his community in this capacity, and his service and dedication to the cause was a sense of pride for him and his family. Robbie loved his colleagues as they did him, and he will be truly missed by all who knew him. It was Robbie’s dedication and spirit in his service and his family’s love for him that inspired this fund. The scholarship is open to those students, whose parents are affiliated with the fire departments in Shelby County including volunteer organizations, who seek a 2 year or 4 year accredited trade, vocational, or university degree.
David & Katherine Platt

This scholarship fund was established by David in 2024 in memory of his wife, Katherine, who passed away earlier in the year. The Platts were lifetime residents of Shelby County where they raised their five children. David served in the National Guard for 9 years and was an employee of Tippecanoe Press for 38 years. Katherine worked for the State House for 2 years before they started to raise their family. Katherine was later a Boy and Girl Scout leader and also the bookkeeper for a campground that the couple purchased in 1983. Together, David and Katherine enjoyed square dancing, bowling, and fishing. They also loved to travel, especially taking cruises. She and David were married for 65 years. Katherine was a loving wife, caring mother, grandma and great grandma. She was a wonderful caregiver caring for her mother-in-law. She enjoyed sewing and doing upholstery work.
