Shelby County Public Library: Bucky Barnes Art Competition
Calling participants for three select age groups: 0-5, elementary and teens. Entries will be judged by age group. Create a piece of art celebrating our hometown hero, Bucky Barnes! Art will be displayed at the Shelby County Public Library. You may even win a prize bundle! Any art or mixed media will be accepted.
Why is this cool contest happening?
The Marvel Comics character named James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes Jr., was born in Shelbyville, Indiana in 1925. Originally introduced as a sidekick to Captain America, the character was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby and first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (cover-dated March 1941) (which was published by Marvel's predecessor, Timely Comics). Barnes' original costume (or one based on it) and the Bucky nickname have been used by other heroes in the Marvel Universe over the years.
The art contest runs from February 17-March 17 at the library. The rest of Shelbyville's Bucky Barnes 100th Birthday celebration includes Bucky serials (Episodes 1-7 and 8-15) at The Strand at 7 p.m. on March 27-28 ($7) and a birthday party at Blessing Opera House from 2-6 p.m. on March 29 with vendor booths, an expert panel discussion, lookalike cosplay contest, trivia, birthday cake and more.
